Deatherage was adopted by Joan Crawford in June 1941, and informally known to Crawford fans as "the first Christopher".
Following Joan's adoption of Deatherage, his biological mother, Rebecca Kullberg, discovered his adoption by Joan Crawford and began to harass her, which resulted in Joan returning Deatherage to his Kullberg who later placed him for adoption for a second time.
